M1 Westlink, Belfast (United Kingdom)
A consortium led by Bilfinger Berger has been awarded a 30-year concession to develop, finance and maintain 60 km of major traffic routes in the Belfast area. One part of the project is the design and construction of a new alignment for the arterial M1 Westlink highway running through the heart of the city. The improvements to M1 Westlink involve: two new grade-separated junctions; reconstructing a grade-separated junction; upgrading junctions; widening to provide a dual three-lane motorway; replacing bridges and improving round-abouts; constructing underpasses; introducing bus priority measures; providing segregated cycleway/footway; upgrading the motorway's communication systems and variable message signing. During construction, traffic has to be maintained at all times and, therefore, a traffic management system will be implemented to reduce interruption.
